Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB) is pleased to announce the election of three distinguished professionals to its Board of Directors – Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur and Mr. Tapan Chowdhury as Directors, and Ms. Zareen Mahmud Hosein as an Independent Director.
Syed Nasim Manzur, Director
Syed Nasim Manzur, a distinguished Bangladeshi industrialist and the Managing Director of Apex Footwear Limited, a leading leather footwear manufacturer and exporter in Bangladesh has been elected as a Director in the Board of MTB. He is the son of Late Syed Manzur Elahi, a renowned entrepreneur, former advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh and the Founding Chairman of Mutual Trust Bank PLC.
In addition to leading Apex Footwear, he holds key positions in several companies, including Chairman of Landmark Footwear Ltd. and serves as Director of Apex Tannery Ltd., Apex Pharma Ltd., and Blue Ocean Footwear Ltd., among others.
Beyond his corporate leadership, Mr. Manzur is deeply engaged in national business and civic initiatives. He is the President of the Leather goods and Footwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association of Bangladesh (LFMEAB), a former two-term President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) and a trustee of BRAC University. He is also associated with NGOs like FRIENDSHIP and SPBA and serves on several national committees related to entrepreneurship, innovation, and export promotion. A strong advocate for sustainable development, he is a core group member of the Citizens Platform for SDGs and frequently speaks at national defense institutions, promoting economic growth through private sector leadership.
Mr. Manzur completed his B.Sc. in Economics with a focus on Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Tapan Chowdhury, Director
Tapan Chowdhury has been elected as Director in the Board of MTB representing ASTRAS Limited in place of Ms. Anika Chowdhury. He is a prominent Bangladeshi industrialist and the second son of the late Samson H. Chowdhury, founder of Square Group.
Mr. Chowdhury began his career at Square Pharmaceuticals, working in the marketing department, where he was instrumental in promoting products and building relationships with healthcare professionals across Bangladesh. In 1995, he was appointed Managing Director of Square Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and he also serves as Chairman of Square Textiles Ltd.
Under his leadership, Square Group has diversified into various sectors, including hospitals, textiles, toiletries, food and beverages, IT, organic tea plantations, capital market operations, and satellite TV broadcasting.
Beyond his corporate roles, Mr. Chowdhury has been actively involved in public service. In 2007, he served as an Adviser (Minister) in Bangladesh’s Caretaker Government, overseeing ministries such as Power & Energy, Youth & Sports, Food & Disaster Management, and Science & ICT. He has also held prominent positions in various organizations, including President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA), Bangladesh Association of Publicly Listed Companies (BAPLC), and Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA).
Mr. Chowdhury is recognized for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in education and healthcare. He has been honored multiple times as one of Bangladesh’s highest individual taxpayers. His leadership continues to shape Square Group’s commitment to innovation, integrity, and community development.
Mr. Chowdhury graduated from the University of Dhaka. He further pursued advanced courses in Business Management and Strategic Planning in the United Kingdom, along with specialized training in pharmaceutical marketing in Switzerland and Belgium.
Zareen Mahmud Hosein, Independent Director
Zareen Mahmud Hosein has been appointed as Independent Director of MTB. Ms. Hosein has 20 plus years of Financial Management and Leadership experience. She is the Founding Partner of Snehasish Mahmud & Co., Chartered Accountants. She is also the Founder of HerStory Foundation and CholPori, a blended learning platform. She is the Editor of the two volumes of HerStories: Adventures of SuperGirls, books on homegrown female role models.
Ms. Hosein started her career at New York City Mayor’s Budget Office and then served at KPMG, LLP in New York where she qualified as a Certified Public Accountant. She moved to Bangladesh and worked at ACNABIN, Chartered Accountants before starting her own practice.
Ms. Hosein serves on the Board of Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE), Shasha Denims Limited, Bangladesh Mahila Samity and Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) Bangladesh. Previously, she has served on the Board of Aga Khan Foundation Bangladesh, Sajida Foundation and Ghashful and was President of EO Bangladesh.
She has a BA from Smith College and an MPA from New York University. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh and an Acumen Fellow.
