Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB) has partnered with Shamadhan Services Limited to launch the country’s first co-branded TakaPay prepaid card for users of gpay, Shamadhan’s digital financial services platform. Unveiled during the official inauguration of the gpay e-wallet platform, this strategic initiative aims to deliver accessible, seamless digital financial solutions to consumers nationwide. The platform will facilitate bill payments, merchant transactions, and broader financial services, catering to online merchants and connecting with approximately 900,000 retail touchpoints across Bangladesh.
Directly linked to the customer’s gpay digital wallet balance, the MTB-gpay co-branded TakaPay prepaid card provides cardholders with instant, real-time access to their funds. Designed for speed and convenience, the card incorporates Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for contactless tap-and-pay transactions. To maximize accessibility, the onboarding journey is entirely digital, allowing users to apply for, receive, and activate their prepaid card seamlessly through the gpay mobile app without needing to visit a physical bank branch.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in advancing financial inclusion and digital empowerment throughout Bangladesh. By integrating the gpay digital wallet with card-based payment infrastructure and connecting directly to the National Payment Switch Bangladesh (NPSB) network, the card offers users flexibility to manage, transfer, and spend funds across diverse payment channels nationwide. The grand launch ceremony was graced by Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus as the Chief Guest. The event was also attended by key leadership from all partner institutions, including Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director & CEO of MTB; Dr. Ahmed Armaan Siddiqui, CEO of gpay; Ashraful Hasan, Managing Director of Shamadhan Services Limited; alongside senior executives from Bangladesh Bank, Shamadhan Services Limited, and Mutual Trust Bank PLC.
