Eligibility Criteria for 2.5% Government Incentive on Wage Earners’ Remittance

Definition of Wage-Earner:

As per The Wage Earner Development Bond Rules, 1981, a Wage-Earner is defined as a Bangladeshi national who is gainfully employed abroad and not employed by the Government or any statutory, autonomous, or semi-autonomous body. This also includes Bangladeshi-origin individuals who have acquired foreign nationality.
Banks shall make decisions accordingly.

Ineligible Remittances:

The following types of remittance do not qualify for the 2.5% government incentive:

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), donations, trade payments, freelancing/IT services/remote jobs, exports, gifts, and goods or services transactions
  • Remittances used to purchase Wage Earner Development Bonds, US Dollar Investment Bonds, or US Dollar Premium Bonds
  • Foreign currency brought in cash by non-residents

Additional Notes:

  • For Foreign Currency (FC) accounts, only wage earners’ remittances sent from abroad are eligible. The 2.5% incentive is applicable only on the portion converted into Bangladeshi Taka, subject to proper verification.
  • If salary is repatriated from abroad by an organization or individual and the beneficiary is a natural person, the remittance may qualify for the incentive upon verification.
